Adult Program: JUMPSUIT with Rational Dress Society
The Fabric Workshop and Museum and the Rational Dress Society invite you to attend a Make-Your-Own-JUMPSUIT workshop and discussion in partnership with DesignPhiladelphia. As participants learn about the history of revolutionary and utopian dress and the current state of the garment industry, they’ll begin the process of cutting and sewing their own JUMPSUITS using a pattern provided by the Rational Dress Society. Attendees will bring their own sewing machines and three yards of non-stretch fabric in a color of their choice. They will learn to read and cut industrial patterns and produce a portion of their own monogarment (with instructions for its completion at home).
JUMPSUIT is an open source, ungendered monogarment designed to replace all clothes in perpetuity. Represented in 248 sizes, JUMPSUIT is liberated from the signifiers of class, race and gender that inscribe our usual relationship to dress. The members of the Rational Dress Society believe that the rejection of choice might open us up to new possibilities and better ways of living. What if you never had to pick out an outfit again? Come to our workshop and find out!
The Rational Dress Society is a counter-fashion collective founded by Chicago-based designer Abigail Glaum-Lathbury and Los Angeles-based artist Maura Brewer. Together they make JUMPSUIT, the open-source ungendered monogarment to replace all clothes.
