Mexico City - Philadelphia Collaboration: Mecate Studio + NextFab
Mexico City is the World Design Capital in 2018 and DesignPhiladelphia is partnering with NextFab, the Mexican Cultural Center and Mexican General Consulate here in Philadelphia to bring two designers from Mexico City to design and make a special, custom item to be on display during the DesignPhiladelphia Festival. Mecate Studio, an architecture and industrial design firm, led by Sebastian Monjaras and Abraham Buenrosto have traveled to Philadelphia to partner with NextFab to design and fabricate a special item for DesignPhiladelphia.
Mecate Studio will spend almost two weeks working at NextFab and are focused on collaborating to create an object to display at Bok in the DesignPhiladelphia exhibit gallery.
“As a maker space, our passion and our mission is to help people use their creativity and make things – whether it’s their hobby or their business. We welcome the opportunity to make a special connection with designers in Mexico City and to learn how they use making and fabrication in their architectural and industrial design business.” Eric Kaplan, NextFab.
The collaboration with the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia and the Mexican Cultural Center was key to make the connection between Philadelphia and Mexico City designers possible. Both, the Consulate of Mexico and the Mexican Cultural Center, are highly committed to the promotion of Mexican avant-garde culture and arts in the Philadelphia region. For this reason, “the collaboration with DesignPhiladelphia and NextFab during the Philadelphia Design Week is extremely important to continue building bridges of understanding that facilitates the exchange of innovative ideas. In that sense, Mecatestudio’s work is an example of Mexico’s modern and innovative design which is conquering the world”, said Consul of Mexico in Philadelphia, Alicia Kerber-Palma.
