Beyond Sustainability
Experience #DesignForHumans with Humanscale and Kershner Office Furniture during an evening with John Strassner, Humanscale Director of Workplace Strategies, who will be discussing "Beyond Sustainability."
As the environmental movement continues to thrive, it is no longer good enough to do less harm or use less resources from the environment. Now is the time for designers to work towards creating a net positive future. Companies on the cutting-edge of the environmental movement are no longer just measuring their carbon footprint, but are actively engaged with clients and partners in measuring their handprint. The handprint measures not what has been damaged, but what has been given back to communities, employees and the environment as a whole.
Please join us for cocktails and light fare in addition to a compelling discussion around sustainable operations, healthy material selection, wildlife preservation and our commitment to having a net positive effect on our global community.
CEU credits available for IDCEC, AIA, and HSW.

AI for fashion: Data is the new black
Fashion designers and fashion houses usually start conceptualizing and designing products for the new season six months to one year prior to the actual selling season–though in recent times this has been drastically reduced with the emergence of fast-fashion retailers. That’s why for most apparel retailers, and the fashion industry in general, knowing the trends customers would like to wear next season is extremely important. This talk will describe how modern AI based tools  which can understand fashion images and articles can be used to provide a more data-driven approach for trend analysis and forecasting.  Dr. Raykar will also describe some of our recent collaborations with various fashion designers.

Please Do Not Touch: Book Signing and Discussion with Murray Moss and Franklin Getchell
Minima, the pair of luxury furniture galleries in Old City, along with Eileen Tognini, will host American design phenom Murray Moss and Franklin Getchell for a reading and book signing of the recently published memoir, please do not touch (and other things you could not do at the design store that changed design) on Friday October 12th at 6:00 pm. Co-authored with Moss’ life partner Franklin Getchell, the Rizzoli imprint recalls the 18 year love affair the world had with eponymously named MOSS, the Soho design and art emporium. Minima’s Friday evening open house is part of Sensory Design, the event series created by the Philadelphia Design District for DesignPhiladelphia 2018.
For nearly two decades MOSS was the place where design, art, luxury, and society mixed and mingled. Murray Moss, the impresario behind the concept store and managing partner Franklin Getchell, were the leading arbiters of good taste and the new throughout the 1990s and until the shop shuttered in 2012. Mixing high with low – think eighteenth-century porcelain standing inside museum quality, glass vitrines with 21st-century Tupperware – MOSS shifted the design conversation from the galleries of MoMA to a storefront in SoHo, and was singularly responsible for igniting the careers of international design stars such as Tord Boontje, Maarten Baas, Marcel Wanders, Hella Jongerius, and Monica Castiglioni, among others.
Together, but separately, Moss and Getchell spent two years writing from memory, keeping the deep dark secret stuff to a minimum, and editing their two memoirs into one witty and image heavy handbook. The resulting  Please do not touch (and other things you could not do at the design store that changed design) has provided a career intermezzo for the pair, and an inside glance for design aficionados on the world according to MOSS.
