Haworth Designer Spotlight Karina Puente, Karina Puente Arts Studio - #HaworthDPDesignerTalks
We understand design can influence and make an impact in our communities and built environment. So this year, in part with Haworth (best known for commercial furniture around the world), we are introducing short talks from emerging/women designers at the Haworth Designer Talks Space in BOK's Girls Gym. The short talk is meant to connect festival attendees with local rock stars of the design community in an intimate setting to share their inspiration, process, and work.
Tonight meet Karina Puente of Karina Puente Arts, a women run studio specializing in custom portraits and art installations for unique spaces, events, weddings, and museums.
Karina Puente is a visual artist based in Philadelphia. She specializes in hand cut, hand dyed art installations for events, celebrations, galleries, and museums. Her practice is anchored in the traditional Mexican folk art of cut paper called Papel Picado. Papel Picado is most commonly seen as colorful banners strung high above Mexican celebrations, weddings, and in Dia De Los Muertos altars. Papel Picado is also a powerful work of handicraft, evidence of cultural pride, unity and survival. Puente contemporizes the folk art by working large. Puente cuts intricate patterns into mural-size paper cloth. Karina's cut patterns symbolize a spark; the feeling when the veil is lifted and an idea or solution occurs. She presents her work in unique exhibition spaces as a useful tool to amplify cultural preservation at the intersection of innovation and tradition.
